Do you use a different glass for pool fences than you use for balustrades?

At Millennium Glass, we often get asked whether the same type of glass can be used for both pool fences and balustrades.

The short answer is no!

Each application has unique requirements that dictate the choice of glass.

Safety and Compliance

First and foremost, safety is paramount.

Pool fences are required by law to meet strict safety standards to prevent accidental drownings, particularly for young children.

This means that the glass used for pool fences must be toughened or laminated to withstand impact. The thickness and type of glass can vary, but it typically needs to comply with local regulations.

Balustrades, on the other hand, serve to prevent falls from heights, such as staircases or balconies.

While they also require toughened or laminated glass, the specifications may differ.

The height and design of balustrades often allow for more aesthetic flexibility, meaning you can choose from a wider variety of finishes and styles.

Durability and Maintenance

Another consideration is durability.

Glass used for pool fences must resist corrosion from chlorine and other pool chemicals. This is where specialised coatings or treatments can come into play, ensuring longevity and ease of maintenance.

In contrast, balustrades are usually not exposed to such harsh conditions, allowing for a broader selection of glass types.

However, it’s essential to choose a glass that’s easy to clean and maintain, especially in outdoor settings.

Aesthetic Appeal

Finally, aesthetics are important for both applications.

You want your pool area and your indoor or outdoor spaces to look great.

At Millennium Glass, we offer a variety of designs that cater to both functionalities, ensuring that your glass installations enhance the beauty of your space while adhering to safety standards.

Do you use a different glass for pool fences than you use for balustrades?

While both pool fences and balustrades use glass, the specific type and requirements vary significantly.
